Just like in September and January moth, on the 4th of May Google started rolling out major updates to its algorithm. They called Google May 2020 core update. From 4th May to 7th May there are lots of fluctuations in ranking due to this major update. Here is the 11-day view from Mozcast:

may-2020-core-update

Google’s Danny Sullivan has confirmed that a core algorithm update is rolling out on the 4th of May. Generally, it takes one or two weeks to streamline things. This is the second confirmed update by Google in 2020. The first was released in January and before that, we had a September month core update.

This core update is for global and for all languages. So it can affect many websites from different industries. Initially, SEO believes that Google hit the website which has old content or content which is recorded before the previous update. However, the truth is that Google always gives positive signals to the website which has good quality content. Yes, you should always change the content for a while, but again it depends on the website & its industry.

After this update, SEMrush declares the SERP winners for different categories. They also published industries that dropped due to this biggest update.

Search Engine Roundtable Hit?

Barry Schwartz from Search Engine Roundtable announces that they may be hit by the latest rolled out May 2020 core update. Search Engine Roundtable is a well-known website for SEO and digital marketing community where they can get the latest updates & other important news from the industry.

The site was hit by Google’s Panda 4.1 update back in 2014 and after that, this is the first time that the site is hit by May 2020 core update. However, Barry optimizes their website traffic as it’s hard to analyze because they cover different news topics and traffic spikes are different based on different search queries. But Barry Schwartz shared organic data and it says that there was a 30% drop in Google traffic of this website.

Google-Analytics

Just like SE Roundtable, many different websites are hit by this biggest update. So, in the current stage, you just need to analyze the data and search queries that are hit by the algorithm. After that, you can take action with the exact solutions. As Google just Rolled out the update and it’s a bit hard to predict the actual cause and how to overcome its bad effect.

The important thing as of now is to just wait until the full update is done rolling out before making any decision in terms of changing things on the website to gain ranking and traffic. Just keep your eyes on SearchLiasion as he will announce when the rollout is done.
